Get creative...Change your color application approach.
We all have our favorite hair color placement. We all have a way of placing foils. We all have our favorite "Safe Formulas". Safe is where we love to be.
I can remember when I would try a new formula and pray that the formula would come out, pacing until I would hear the timer ring. From the time I would start to take out the foils, through the shampoo and treatment, my eyes would be glued to the hair, to see if I was even close to my target level and tone, reminding myself to breath!
Feeling a little dizzy from lack of oxygen, I would bring my guest back to my workstation and start the comb out, not making eye contact with my guest, breathing, combing, not making eye contact - until... I knew she liked what she saw!
Still trying to assess the end result of this new formula, I would then begin to evaluate the placement, is this working well? In this case for her bob? Here is when my guest would drop the bomb. “I want to do something new with my cut. Let’s layer it today!” Oops! Someone’s not breathing again!
I should have changed my approach to this service. Cut first, then place color for her new cut! It really is up to us to make sure we have a firm plan for our guests’ next appointment. If we pre book them, we should have a PLAN for their hair the NEXT time they come in.
I’ve heard there is a statistic that states, “Our guests leave because they are bored.” I know we have benchmarks that monitor our pre-booking, and that some stylists have a challenge with pre-booking. I believe this is because we miss an important step in our consultation.
During our consultation we always give our guests options, time frame, cost, maintenance, and home care. What we need to include is a ‘client retention guarantee catch phrase’. Ours is, “For your next appointment we will…”. Here is an example: “The season is changing and we should add low-lights to bring some richness to the color, so our next appointment we will...”
Thinking ahead to the next appointment allows you to prepare during this appointment. Try a few test strands now with formulas you want to do for those low lights on your guest next time (don’t forget to write down the ones you like). Now, not only do you have a head start, but also your guest is totally enrolled in returning for her next adventure! Time to breathe easy. Furthermore, after ringing up her home care and fun new makeup, you can schedule her next appointment properly; accommodating her new haircut and her new color.
Changing your approach keeps things interesting for you … and for your guest.
