How can you help implement your team’s use of their HCM knowledge?

Throughout the HCM course, we spoke about how to incorporate your team’s new information into their workday. They should not try EVERYTHING they have learned on EVERY client, as they will run over on time and be overwhelmed. Make sure they incorporate their new information slowly until they are confident with the concepts. I am sharing the Suggestions Of Implementation with you so you know what to expect and can support your team. As a fellow salon owner, I want to make sure that your salon and your team is set up for success.

Key Points

Variables:

We discussed the fundamentals of hair color on how we see color. There are variables that have to be taken into consideration: texture, type and density of hair. These variables affect what type of formula we use: Soft, Regular, & Strong, as well as developer strength.

You should notice a change in the teams formulas and pure tone usage. Also, they will be combining developers, which is not taught by Aveda. However, the developer combinations work well at the new growth to prevent a “Hot Root” effect.

Grey Coverage:

During the Grey Coverage segment, we discussed two elements that needed to be considered for a successful Grey Coverage application.

The first element is Formulation. In this segment, the team experienced how Light NN and Dark NN need a little help with Light and Dark YO. Our color is customized for white/coarse hair for better grey coverage.

The second element is Application. Grey hair is coarse and tenacious. The color needs to be applied and re-applied. Should the formula call for 20 grams more for the re-application, the guest needs to be told during the consultation and the extra product charge should be applied to their bill. I charge a $9.00 service charge that is rung up under the salon key.

Checking Formulas:

Your amazing team member learned a fun way to check a formula to make sure the end reflective tone is what they want to see. It was suggested the team members would come in early, on their time, to check formulas for the day and adjust what they need to make their formulas successful.

Some Owner/Managers are letting the colorist take home their client’s travelers for the next day to check their formulas the night before, so the colorist will not run late for their appointments.

Cheating Formulas:

As colorists, we know color does not lift color. However, we experience cheating formulas to create lift and tone over previously colored hair for highlighting by using Shades of Enlightenment. This can help with saving time from the “bleach and tone” service. We normally do not suggest doing these formulas because they are not predictable.

In order to make these formulas predictable, the colorists should test strands on their guests during their current appointment and suggest dimension/texture for their next appointment. Doing this will help in two ways … It makes an unpredictable color predictable and they are getting their clients get excited about their next appointment. This also helps pre-booking numbers.

Suggested dialogue to create services and pre-booking;

Creating dialogue to suggest dimension/texture in the hair equal up-selling their guest’s service. This is where the colorist will test strand formulas and get the client excited about their next appointment. Make sure the stylist writes down the formulas and what they are going to do on the next appointment.

Create dialogue to make the team feel comfortable with pre-booking and up-selling their services. The colorist needs to have a clear consultation so the guest knows what to expect for their next service. Price is an important aspect of up-selling services.

Fill & Fix Formulas:

These formulas are the Perfect Low Lighting Formulas. They are a creative way of filling and coloring the hair at the same time, which requires the use of extra pure tone product. It is imperative that this concept be used for Low Lighting and not for an all over color.

These formulas are customized and should be priced accordingly. The formulas are used to create dimension and texture in a color placement, which can be used as a corrective element. I suggest that the guest is aware of the cost of product and that the extra time for the low light is taken into account for the team’s productivity cost.
